Founded in 1987, Health Level Seven International (HL7) is a not-for-profit standard developing organization founding member of the Joint Initiative Council for Global Health Informatics Standardization with members in 50+ countries. HL7 Affiliated organizations support the activities of HL7 in 20 European (38 world-wide) counties serving as multi-stakeholder platforms e.g. HL7-France, HL7-Germany, HL7-Netherlands, HL7-Spain, etc. Each affiliated organization is a multi-stakeholder ecosystem founded by a mixture of industry, government agencies, academic institutions and practitioners of interoperability. HL7 members in other countries may seek membership to HL7 International or nearby affiliates.
The vision of HL7 is a world in which everyone can securely access and use the right health data when and where they need it. Its mission is to provide standards that empower global health data interoperability.
The HL7 Foundation established in Brussels in 2010, addresses European standardization needs in the area of digital health. It works in close cooperation with European Affiliates and supports the creation of health information technology standards that are widely and easily used enabling interoperability in healthcare.
