The role and function of the Department of Health of the Republic of Ireland is to provide strategic leadership for the health service and to ensure that Government policies for the sector are translated into actions and implemented effectively. It supports

the Minister and Ministers of State in their implementation of Government policy. Key functions of the Department include the preparation of national health policy based on identified need, the preparation of legislation, planning and monitoring of financial and manpower resource and monitoring the performance of the health services.
